Penn's Three Graduate Programs in Classical Studies
For over a century, Penn has offered graduate study in Classical Studies, including languages and literature, history, archaeology, and cultural studies:
- Graduate study takes place under the supervision of three overlapping graduate "groups" of faculty from multiple departments.
- Each group has its own doctoral program with its own requirements, and its own advisor (the graduate group chair) and application process.
- Students in each of these groups are equally involved in the Penn Classical Studies department, taking many of the same courses and participating in such events as the weekly Penn Classical Studies Colloquium.
- Students interested in applying for graduate study at Penn are encouraged to explore all three of these groups to identify which one corresponds most closely to their interests and goals, and to contact the chair of the relevant graduate group with any questions about the program.
- In all of these programs, the Department encourages interdisciplinary and comparative approaches to teaching and research and maintains productive ties with a variety of programs across the School of Arts and Sciences.
