New work on the lives of Roman non-elites is changing the way we understand everything from Roman economies to social relationships. This talk presents new work from the Roman Peasant Project, an interdisciplinary archaeological project supported by the National Science Foundation and the Penn Museum. This talk will present an overview of the results pertaining to agriculture and landuse, suggesting that central Italian peasants used their land in unexpected ways which have important implications for our understanding of Roman agriculture, settlement patterns and what it meant to "dwell" in the Roman countryside.
