Abstract: Most people today make a living from wage labour. Under the Roman empire, with its baths and potteries, bigger farms and larger textile workshops, working for wages became increasingly common. This talk uses the papyri from Egypt to examine wage earning from the worker's perspective.In doing so, it probes the boundary between the enslaved and poorest free workers.
