Title: "The ancient glass imaginary"

Abstract: In this paper I explore the semiotics of glass in a range of literary sources from the Imperial period. These texts present glass as a marvellous protean substance and an artisanal wonder that can embody the qualities of its owner and provoke reflections on the magic of literature itself.
