Title: "The Trials of Aelius Aristides"

Abstract: Aelius Aristides' Sacred Tales preserve a lengthy description of the occasions on which their author ended up in court. As such they constitute important evidence for the ways that elites of the Greek-speaking Roman world interacted with imperial institutions, and the ways in which they understood their legal world. Taking Aristides' narrative of his courtroom encounters as a guide, this talk will also argue that elites of this period strived to redefine the nature of imperial legality.
