The minor in Ancient History focuses on the content and methods of historical study, and may include a focus on other ancient mediterranean and global cultures, not just Greece and Rome.
The minor consists of six courses, configured as follows:
- 1 required core introductory course: ANCH 0100 Ancient Middle Eastern History and Civilization, ANCH 0101 Ancient Greece, or ANCH 0102 Ancient Rome. [Old 3-digit numbers = 025, 026, 027.]
- Any 5 other courses in Ancient History (ANCH), Classical Studies (CLST), Greek (GREK), Latin (LATN), or other departments focusing on ancient studies, as approved by the Undergraduate Chair in Classical Studies.
Students interested in declaring a minor should meet with the Undergraduate Chair as early as possible to plan their coursework—though students who have completed all or most of the courses required for a minor are welcome to declare retroactively!
Students who have taken introductory and intermediate courses in Latin and/or Greek, even to fulfill the Foreign Language Requirement, may use up to four of these courses toward the minor.
Students may also double-count as many Sector courses toward the Minor as they wish.
In cases where most courses are focused on language, literature, and culture rather than history per se, it may be more appropriate to take the Minor in Classical Studies.
