COLLOQUIUM: Jonathan P. Conant, Brown University, "Child-beating and Trauma in Late Antiquity"

Oct 29, 2015 at - | 402 Cohen Hall

Through the works of authors like Augustine, John Chrysostom, and Libanius, Jonathan Conant explores the late Roman debate about the morality, efficacy, and social and psychological costs of beating children. Placing this discourse in dialog with modern scientific research into the physiological and developmental effects of child abuse, the talk will then explore broader questions of the role of violence in structuring ancient society.
